Guantanamo Bay 2010: Should it Remain Open?

President Obama missed his 2010 deadline to close Guantanamo Bay.  The rural Illinois prison, proposed by Obama, does not look promising and Yemen is no longer an option as evidence has surfaced indicating the Christmas Day bomb-plotter received al-Qaeda training within Yemen’s border.  Missing the deadline could prove politically problematic for the President, but considering the hiccups in closing the prison, now might be a good time to stop and ask – should the United States close Guantanamo Bay?  The Council on Foreign Relations presents an interesting discussion of this question.  One side of the debate argues that what the prison symbolizes puts America at risk and the other side counters that Guantanamo is the only practical place to house numerous potential war criminals.  Whichever side a person falls on, it is an interesting question to consider.  See here for the discussion.

  1. Close it. Or get rid of the torture. Can’t let it continue. An action must be taken against the cruelty that occurs inside the walls of Guantanamo Bay Prison.

  2. Well, there is obviously STRONG reasons for why the people are in there, I am not willing to risk the lives of Americans, Especially Native Americans, because we decided to close down the prison. People would not be in there if there was not enough evidence to with hold them in the unique way guantanamo bay prison does. The people in there should not have put themselves in the position to be considered a threat. If you choose to close it down. Then put prisoners on death row. It’s being done to people far less threatening so why not make the prisoners who ACTUALLY ARE a threat the national safety, well being, and economic health to this nation. KEEP IT OPEN, or find other solutions to stop them.

  3. Guantanamo Bay should be closed for many reasons. There are a variety of innocents who are being tortured everyday for no reason. Thus, this devil place should be closed up soon.

  4. Jacob Peterson… you sure are incredibly ignorant if you are saying that everyone there are associated with terrorists then you are dead wrong, there have been a lot of reports on innocent people being detained there for absolutely no reason… And if they do have evidence on them being related to terrorists then why don’t they follow the geneva convention its a treaty that the people being detained must be trialled for if they are a war prisoner or just a civilian. I also can’t believe you are suggesting to put them in a death row when there might be innocent people in there… this is practically like how the nazi put the jewish into concentration camp and then murder them in there…

  5. It should absolutely be kept open. The prisoners in there would show no mercy to us, so why should we be civil with them?

  6. I am canadian, and i was just reading up on this whole argument, and I however cant comment on it, becuase that would be unfair seeing I dont know that much about it nor am I American or Cuban, But I do however want to know, why cant you guys can’t get along even know as have have researched both the US an Cuba have there diffrences, which everyone one does!

  7. It enrages me to still hear that this is still open. I am currently reading a book Zeitoun. It is about a man who had been caught by the us government just because he looks like a middle eastern person. but you know he is totally an innocent person. there are innocents like him in there. US gov. should be ashamed of themselves, for allowing this to happen.. Little by little, i am starting to realize how ignorant “america” really is..

  8. harvard2010 and jacob peterson you seem to honestly have no hearts the people in that horrid place are being put in that facility because they believe that their instincts are right but most of the time they are not. people everyday are being tortured or killed what if it was you put in there? would that change your mind?
