Experts Forecast Pentagon Budget Crisis

Although the Department of Defense (DOD) budget is reportedly spared from the spending “freeze” announced by the Obama administration earlier this week, experts warn that the Pentagon will not be immune to the country’s long term deficit reduction efforts. At a discussion sponsored by the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments this past Tuesday, analyst Todd Harrison forecast that the Department will no longer have the “luxury” of simply postponing “many different decisions.” Specifically, DOD budget decision-makers will soon be forced to resolve the “disconnect between the plans and programs DOD has put forward over the past decade and the resources available to support these programs in the long run.” The Defense budget request for fiscal year 2011 will be released on February 1, and experts do not expect any significant budget cuts.
