Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that the U.S. foiled a plot by factions supported by the Iranian regime to kill the Saudi Ambassador to the United States among others on U.S. soil. The FBI was responsible for disrupting the plot which included the Iranians working with the Mexican drug cartel, Zetas. One of the defendants, Manssor Arbabsiar, was arrested on September 29th and confessed to the plot in New York. Arbabsiar worked for the Iranian military apparatus, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and was wired $100,000 down payment of the total $1.5 million fee for the assassination. His co-defendant, Gholam Shakuri is still at large. Allegations by the Iranian regime that this is a prefabricated situation have been rebuffed by U.S. officials that are in possession of intelligence which shows that Iranian officials at the highest levels were involved in the plot. The U.S. State Department has promised a response to this Iranian plot, which some have referred to as an act of war. Of the 5 counts listed against the defendants, one includes a charge of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and another includes conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism.
