The accused mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will be moved from Guantanamo Bay to New York for trial in civilian court, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Friday.
Four other alleged terrorists will all face trial in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The court is just a few blocks from the World Trade Center towers that were destroyed in the September 11 attacks.
Holder said he expected prosecutors to seek the death penalty.
Five other detainees held at Guantanamo Bay will be sent to military commissions for trial.
Several Republican politicians denounced the decision as treating the suspects as “common criminals,” not the terrorists that they are.
