Antigua and Barbados Vessel Saved From Pirates

The Ariella was en route to the Indian Ocean from the Red Sea when the 25-person ship saw 6 to 7 people firing weapons at them from a small boat nearby.  The NATO Danish forces responded to the distress call placed by the captain.  Although the ship increased in speed, the pirates managed to get close enough to board and pass through a barbed wire fence set up by the ship’s crew.  A french plane flew ahead and confirmed the presence of pirates; however, a NATO helicopter did not see anyone on board. It is not usual for military forces to intervene during the hijacking for fear the innocent may be injured.
