Hamas Leader's Death Could Impede Flow of Weapons to Gaza

According to both Israeli and Hamas sources, the recent death of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh – a high-ranking Hamas leader in Gaza – could have major ramifications in the region. Hamas believe Israel is responsible for the death of Al-Mabhouh, who was found dead in Dubai on Jan. 20.

Israeli officials believe al-Mabhouh was a key link between Hamas’ operations in Gaza and Iranian weapons being smuggled into the region. Furthermore, it is believed that his death will seriously impede the flow of weapons into the Gaza Strip, at least until Hamas is able to replace him.

In response to al-Mabhouh’s death, Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar issued a warning to Israel. According to al-Zahar, “Israel wants to change the rules of the game and to open the international field for battles— so it will be responsible for this.”
