Israel and Hamas Closer to Prisoner Exchange

Amid the backdrop of recent missile strikes exchanged by Israel and Palestine, it appears that the two governments are on the verge of agreeing to a prisoner exchange, motivated by the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit by Palestinian militants in 2009. The exchange is mediated in Egypt by representatives from Egypt and Germany. The exchange would include the release of approximately 400 Palestinian prisoners upon Shalit’s safe transfer to Egypt. Israel would release more Palestinians upon Shalit’s safe return to Israel. The exchange includes some 160 prisoners who Israel had previously not considered eligible for the exchange. Last month, Israel released a small number of prisoners in exchange for proof-of-life of Shalit. Read more at Reuters.
