The Justice Department’s National Drug Intelligence Center released its “National Drug Threat Assessment 2010 report” on Thursday, finding that the availability of illegal drugs is increasing in the United States. The report cites Mexican drug cartels as the reason, and labels them as “the single greatest drug trafficking threat to the United States.” The report estimates that drug trafficking costs the United States an estimated $215 billion annually.
Mexican drug cartels are expanding their reach into the United States through increased operations in rural and suburban areas. Street and prison gangs have been recruited to serve as intermediaries. The report found greater levels of heroin, marijuana and methamphetamines flowing across than border than ever before, and predicts the level will only continue to rise.
