Operation Moshtarak launched just before dawn in Southern Afghanistan today, the Wall Street Journal reported. Unlike previous operations, Operation Moshtarak, meaning “together” in Dari, was highly publicized to warn residents to take precautions and militants in the area to leave or be killed. Nato reportedly distributed leaflets for several weeks prior.
The operation is intended to be a new prototype of warfare based on General Stanley McCrystal’s philosophy as articulated when he rallied for a troop surge in 2009. In addition to Nato forces, the Afghan military has reportedly had an unprecedented role of involvement and leadership in the planning of the surge. This overall offensive beginning in Marjah in the Taliban heavy southern region of the country will be the largest assault since the Taliban regime fell in 2001.
