President Obama is hoping to reassure Pakistan of its place as a close US ally after announcing an increase in the number of US troops in Afghanistan. Secretary Clinton followed suit by saying, “We will significantly expand support intended for Pakistan to develop the potential of their people.” Clinton’s conciliatory tone is a striking contrast to her statements made while on a state visit in Pakistan. President Obama’s overtures to Pakistan may have been influenced by recent revelations that Pakistan may actually be winning its portion of the war on al Qaeda and extremist Taliban efforts.
