Although American politicians have gotten little reaction to the recent plan from the Obama administration for a troop buildup in Afghanistan, it will no doubt be a significant topic of discussion with Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan this week, in addition to Iranian nuclear plans, and U.S. arms deals. The U.S. has already asked Turkey for a troop increase from the 1,750 they currently have in Afghanistan. In spite of outwardly divergent opinions on some foreign policy issues, particularly with regard to the Middle East, the prospects for this meeting look good given Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu’s recent comments that the U.S. and Turkey “share the problems, and we are therefore trying to solve these problems together.”
