Mahmous Said Omar, a Somalian accused of recruiting for and funding for Al-Shabab, is attempting to avoid extradition from the Netherlands. Omar’s extradition is part of a larger investigation into the activities of Somali youth in Minnesota which has yielded fourteen indictments to date. Beginning in 2007, small groups of young Somali males began leaving Minnesota to fight for Al-Shabab, a radical Islamist organizations that is actively vying for control of Somalia. Minnesota currently hosts America’s largest Somali population, the majority of which emigrated during the early 1990s.
