Syria Jumps Into Iran Nuclear Conflict

Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s President, has come out in support of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The outspoken al-Assad is quoted as stating that “the right of Iran and other countries that are signatories to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty [is] to enrich uranium for civilian purposes”. Accompanying the President’s remarks, Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid Muallem made statements urging Iran and the West to settle the issue by political means, including dialogue, and not resort to any armed conflict. The remarks came after a visit to Damascus by Saeed Jalili, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Both Iran and Syria stress that Iran should be allowed to enrich uranium for energy purposes. The statements come at a time when Iran has asked for fuel from the International Atomic Energy Agency for one of their research reactors.
