With recent scrutiny in the wake of the failed Christmas Day airline bombing attempt, Yemen has stepped up its campaign against al Qaeda within its borders. The New York Times reports Yemen has killed an al Qaeda cell leader and captured four others in its stepped up campaign against al Qaeda. Yemen’s poor economy, domestic security and proximity to both Saudi Arabia and Somalia have made it a regional haven for al Qaeda militants. Increased US assistance in support of counterterrorism operations will be crucial for the Yemeni government, especially considering their refusal to allow foreign troops to operate on their territory.
